Sit down for the campaign and stay for the multiplayer

By Adam Jones
Halo 3 ODST has great value and a high fun factor. Critics scorn the price but they are discounting the Halo 3 mutliplayer. You get 2 discs with Halo 3 ODST. One disc has a fun and exciting campaign where you fight against extra-terrestrial hordes and a “firefight” mode where you and your friends fight even more extra-terrestrials. The VISR mode is an especially cool new feature for first person shooter veterans. The other disc has classic Halo 3 multiplayer with dozens of maps and a quick and easy matchmaking system.

Never owned Halo 3? This is a no-brainer. Own Halo 3? Do what I did: sell Halo 3 and use the money to buy Halo 3 ODST.

Don’t listen to anyone, not even me

By Terrence Aybar
Halo 3 ODST has gotten a bit of a strange reception since its release last week and I’ll tell you, it makes no sense to me. All I can do is tell you what I did and didn’t like about the game plus my personal overall opinion about the title.

To keep it short, Halo 3 ODST is, in my honest opinion, one of the best titles to be released for the Xbox 360 this year. Not only that, I’d even go so far as to say that this installment of the Halo series has the best or at least, the most entertaining story to date of any single one. Halo 3 ODST plays like a noir film set in a sci-fi future universe, complete with dark streets, neon lights, tall skyscrapers and a mystery to be solved. It manages to be its own entity in a world that most people associate Master Chief with as its main focus of what makes the series such a success. I found the stroryline of Halo 3 ODST to be the easiest to follow and enjoyed my time spent with the characters in the story. You get to spend a bit of time with each one in segments that present some pretty intense battles in varying locales and scenarios. HALO 3 ODST is a Halo game through and through, the one difference this time being that you’re not gonna feel so invincible ’cause you’re not a Spartan. I really enjoyed the story and thought it fit very well and not as an eyesore on the rest of the Halo timeline. And playing Halo 3 ODST live with three other players in co-op makes it even more enjoyable. The voice acting is well done and its cool to see Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame putting in some screentime as the game’s main character (of sorts). I’d also like to say, Halo 3 ODST has some of the best music in the series. My hats off to the Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori for putting together a score that I already own.

In Halo 3 ODST there is a great mode called Firefight which most likely will get compared to Gears of War 2’s Horde mode where you survive wave after waves of increasingly stronger enemies. If you liked it then, you’ll love it now as it’s every bit of much fun as Horde was. In my opinion, this mode is worth owning the game for just on its own value.

All I can say is, if you like Halo 3 in the least, there’s no way you can get disappointed by Halo 3 ODST. While the campaign is admittedly a bit short, clocking in somewhere between 7-10 hours depending on how much time you invest in achieving all the game has to offer, it still provides a decent challenge while playing in Legendary difficulty. Again, multiplayer co-op in either campaign or firefight mode is a blast. I loved every minute of Halo 3 ODST.

New Hero, New Campaign, New Multiplayer, More Fun

By Trent Thorne

I believe even if you’re not a Halo fan you will like Halo 3 ODST. The story-telling is what truly shines here. Bungie did a great job in creating the mood of Halo 3 ODST. It’s well paced and there is really never a dull moment. As the player (the Rookie) you feel alone and hopeless in a war torn city. The streets of Mombasa are littered with dead Covenant, other dead ODST soldiers as well as smoldering Scorpion tanks and other military vehicles that are in ruins. The city feels like a ghost town. Although the graphics are showing their age, I think Halo 3 ODST is a step up from Halo 3 in almost every department. The story is more interesting, the graphics are slightly better, there’s never a dull moment (you’re either shooting or taking cover), and the new health system adds a clever twist to the game. The Halo 3 ODST campaign is a tad short but however it did take me more than 6 hours to complete (more like 7 hours) because I wanted to explore everything in the city. If you like shooting games with an interesting story, I think you will like Halo 3 ODST. Oh, and Firefight mode is addicting and fun. It’s a great new addition.

The voice acting is well done and its cool to see Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame putting in some screentime as the game’s main character (of sorts). I’d also like to say, this one has some of the best music in the series. My hats off to the Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori for putting together a score that I already own.

Control is typical Halo sans dual wielding. You do get to carry more grenades and employ a pretty nice accessory in the form of a visor that gives the player an advantage in highlighting borders on objects such as cars, walls and general objects while enemies are highlighted red making them easier to pinpoint. The graphics are Halo style all the way and if you thought that the graphics for Halo 3 were at least passable, you’ll probably feel the same way with this one as well.

There’s also a great mode called Firefight which most likely will get compared to Gears of War 2’s Horde mode where you survive wave after waves of increasingly stronger enemies. If you liked it then, you’ll love it now as it’s every bit of much fun as Horde was. In my opinion, this mode is worth owning the game for just on its own value.
